Specialty program offers leaders future view of health IT

LAS VEGAS – At HIMSS12, conference attendees can explore what is currently happening in healthcare technology, emerging models and those on the distant horizon and their market potential in the HIMSS12 Specialty Programs group. Programs include topics for physician executives, CIOs, venture capitalists and multi-lingual and global future health IT thinkers.

These sessions will offer the chance to delve inside topics on leadership in connecting consumers with their health care; IT strategies for clinical leaders; health information exchanges; electronic collaboration and forums for CIOs and health IT venture capitalists.

 

For example, the Physician Executive Forum, “created by physician executives for physician executives, is a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in all the aspects of present and future meaningful use requirements, as well as others including clinical decision support, clinical intelligence, coordinated care and patient-centered medical home,” said David Collins, senior director of HIMSS professional development. Dr. Holly Miller, HIMSS board vice chair and chief medical officer of MedAllies, a provider of health information exchange, will host the forum, which will feature presentations from more than 50 clinicians over the three days, Collins said.Leading from the Future: A HIMSS Thought Leadership Event on Connecting Consumers with their Healthcare, offers perspectives on how to enable health IT stakeholders to connect consumers with their healthcare, whether through a care encounter, payment issues, wellness and prevention or research.

 

Session topics kick off Thursday, Feb. 23 at 8:30 a.m. with a keynote by Dr. Farzad Mostashari, the national health IT coordinator, and followed by Regina Holliday, a Washington, D.C. patient rights and arts advocate, on inspiring consumer engagement and the power of health IT. HIT X.0: Beyond the Edge brings health IT leaders to the forefront of innovative ideas, scientific advances and emerging technologies so they can advance the future of patient care. The 10 interactive sessions give attendees the exclusive opportunity to engage with state-of-the-art technology and groundbreaking health IT thinkers. The programs will venture into the role of virtual environments in behavioral medicine, physical medicine and rehabilitation and medical training; the new health/medical apps available for iPads, iPhones, Androids and other mobile devices.

 

For example, May Wang, associate professor at Georgia Tech and Emory University, will talk about the StealthVest, a wearable and multi-functional mobile health system to monitor epilepsy and cardiac arrhythmias on Tuesday, Feb. 21, at 9:45 a.m.Something many physicians can use is “Being Four Places at Once,” a presentation by Dr. Brian Rothman, medical director of Perioperative Informatics at Vanderbilt University, on mobile device situational awareness solving the “last mile” problem of EHRs and telemedicine by connecting clinicians to several patients while at one bedside, on Thursday, Feb. 23, at 1:00 p.m.Health IT in the Latino Community (http://www.himssconference.org/latino/default.aspx) will discuss the unique problems and strengths related to health care and using technology to have a positive impact on the Latino population, on Monday, Feb. 20, at 1 p.m.
