Across the Twittersphere: Using social media to connect at #HIMSS12

LAS VEGAS — Thousands of HIMSS12 attendees are already discussing topics, networking and creating an online social community around the conference with the help of Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube.

Using the #HIMSS12 hashtag and with the help of @HIMSS, attendees will remain up to date on new speakers, breaking news and valuable resources that will help them prepare for the conference and show.

“We’re really trying to promote content in tandem with different things that are happening there,” said Cari McLean, HIMSS manager, social media.

Accompanying all virtual interactions, HIMSS will be featuring a Social Media Center on site in Hall C Lobby, where “people can learn more about the application of social technology in healthcare, as well as maximize their networking activity,” said McLean.

The center includes a theater area where there will be nine education sessions with social media and blogging experts in the health IT field, who will discuss how they’ve used social media professionally.

“They’ll be talking about how they’re leveraging social media in the healthcare setting to break down the barriers between patients and providers, and how they’re using it as a proactive tool to communicate internally,” said McLean.

Within the center will be screens displaying the latest #HIMSS12 tweets, as well as kiosks where people can tweet on the spot about interesting sessions. A networking lounge will include couches and coffee where people can sit and connect with others interested in exploring social media.
