Gupta, Markopolos, share HIMSS stage to talk Medicare fraud

By John Andrews, Contributing Editor

A powerhouse program on Medicare fraud at HIMSS10 will feature two well-known figures discussing the issue in a Q&A format.
TV medical correspondent Sanjay Gupta, MD, and Medicare fraud investigator Harry Markopolos will give a joint Keynote presentation at the Georgia World Congress Center on Thursday, March 4, at 8:30 AM – 9:30 AM, in the Thomas Murphy Ballroom. In a first-time pairing, Gupta will interview Markopolos – known as the man who uncovered the Madoff Ponzi scheme – on a host of healthcare fraud topics.

Karen Malone, HIMSS vice president of meeting services, says Dr. Gupta “is very intrigued” about the opportunity to interview Markopolos.

Well known to CNN viewers as a health and wellness expert, Gupta is also a practicing neurosurgeon and holds a faculty position at Emory University. Since joining CNN in 2001, Gupta has reported on several major events, including the post-Sept. 11 anthrax attacks, field surgery in Iraq, the Asian tsunami aftermath, Hurricane Katrina and the H1N1 epidemic. His documentary about how Katrina affected hospital patients in New Orleans earned Gupta an Emmy award in 2006.

Markopolos, a former financial analyst who became a full-time fraud investigator in 2004, is credited with being the whistleblower that exposed the Bernard Madoff scandal. In focusing on the financial services and healthcare industries, his duties include bringing fraud cases to the U.S. Department of Justice and the Internal Revenue Service under existing whistleblower bounty programs.
