Waking up is easier when you know a tasty meal is waiting for you. Here are several of our suggestions for some of Atlanta’s best ways to start your day.
The Flying Biscuit Cafe: The playful, creative menu has a Southern flare, but offers many healthy and vegan options. The original Candler Park location opened in 1993, but has since expanded to six additional metro area locations, including one in both the Midtown and Perimeter areas, and two in Buckhead. Great lunch and dinner (at most locations) as well, but breakfast is available all day. Check the Web site for hours as they vary by location. www.flyingbiscuit.com
Johnny Cakes: Caribbean-influenced menu with simple, healthy options. French press coffee, lunch menu and free Wi-Fi, too. Open 7:00 AM – 5:30 PM Monday through Saturday, 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM on Sunday, with food and music from 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM on Fridays. 678.705.9759, 323 Walker St., Atlanta, GA 30302, www.worldfamousjohnnycakes.com
Highland Bakery: Selections ranging from your classic eggs and bacon to more adventurous items like cilantro corn pancakes and peanut butter French toast. Grab a muffin or pastry at the bakery counter if you don’t have time to sit. Both breakfast and lunch are served all day, 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM weekdays and 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM on weekends. 404.586.0772, 655 Highland Ave., #10, Atlanta, GA 30312, www.highlandbakery.com
Ria’s Bluebird: Famous pancakes. Eclectic menu, servers and decor. Some vegan options available. Open 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM every day, breakfast served all day, lunch menu available starting at 11:00 AM. 404.521.3737, 421 Memorial Dr. SE, Atlanta, GA 30312, http://riasbluebird.com
The Silver Skillet: Southern is their specialty. Open since 1956, its classic diner atmosphere has been featured in several movies and TV shows. Open 6:30 AM – 2:30 PM on weekdays, 8:00 AM – 2:00 PM on weekends. Breakfast served all day, lunch menu available Monday through Friday at 11:00 AM. 404.874.1388, 200 14th St. NW, Atlanta, GA 30318, www.thesilverskillet.com
Sublime Doughnuts: The name doesn’t lie – their doughnuts are just heavenly. A refreshing alternative to other chains in the area, this place is a must-stop for fans of the breakfast pastry. Our favorites are the Dulce de Leche, Powdered Raspberry and A-town Cream (the Atlanta version of a Boston Cream). Open 6:00 AM – 6:00 PM Tuesday through Friday, 7:00 AM – 6:00 PM on Saturday, 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM on Sunday and closed on Mondays. 404.897.1801, 535 Tenth St., Atlanta, GA 30318, http://sublimedoughnuts.com
Thumbs Up Diner: Lots of choices on the menu, including just about any traditional breakfast item you can think of. They only accept cash. Breakfast and lunch served all day. Two diners downtown, plus three additional locations in the metro area. Open 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM on weekdays and 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM on weekends (except the Roswell location closes at 3:00 PM). www.thumbsupdiner.com
Waffle House: Now in 25 states, this chain’s very first store opened near Atlanta in the 1950s. It’s not gourmet, but it’s not hard to find, either. There are so many locations in Georgia that you’re bound to run into one by just traveling a few blocks in any direction. All locations are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. www.wafflehouse.com.
