Southern Folks Know How to Shop: The Dodge Communications Guide to Atlanta’s Best

You don’t want to visit Atlanta without picking up some “souvenirs.” Just consider those shopping trips your own personal kind of product research…
The Buckhead area has been called the “Rodeo Drive of the South,” but at the rate things are going we expect Rodeo Drive will soon be known as the “Buckhead of the West.” The many shopping districts could keep you browsing for days among art galleries, boutiques and home décor stores. Phipps Plaza is a Buckhead mall that’s so upscale you feel like it’s kind of bad manners not to look your best when you visit. Just down the road is Lenox Square mall, a slightly less chic but still quite sophisticated option.
Near the intersection of I-285 and GA-400, the Perimeter area includes the Perimeter Mall, which is a little more casual than its Buckhead counterparts but offers a similar variety of stores and restaurants. Many strip malls and other shopping venues are located nearby.
Atlantic Station is a large planned community near Midtown featuring apartments, stores, restaurants and entertainment venues, all built on a site that once housed a steel mill. If you visit consider taking a break from browsing to go check out the Dialog in the Dark and Bodies exhibitions currently running in the Premier Exhibition Center. An IKEA store is just down the street from the main shopping area – and with the 99 cent breakfast and the sheer vastness of the place, it’s always a fun place to wander (as long as you don’t get lost).
Named for the intersection of Virginia and Highland Avenues, you’ll find many unique shops in the Virginia Highland neighborhood, some of which are located in the historic bungalow homes common to the area. Many restaurant and entertainment venues are also available for your enjoyment.
To the northwest, near the banks of the Chattahoochee River you’ll find Vinings Jubilee, a modern shopping and dining center built in a 19th-century style that matches its historic surroundings.
We must mention Underground Atlanta as a main shopping and entertainment area downtown, but admit we’re not quite sure what to say about it. Some admire the eclectic offerings and say it’s a great place to buy city souvenirs, but others are not big fans. Most, however, can agree that the location has a fascinating history. Concrete viaducts built almost a century ago to direct traffic over railroad tracks created this underground city. Here you will find a gas lamp that survived General Sherman’s shells and the only remaining section of Central Atlanta’s oldest building, the Georgia Railroad Freight Depot. Guided history tours are available.
Considering all the shopping options in the city, it may take some time to make your selections. But whatever you’re in the market for, you’re bound to find something that fits the bill. Now ready, set, shop!
