These Burgers Are Real Hams: The Dodge Communications Guide to Atlanta’s Best

Forget tired, typical fast-food fare. In this town our burgers are a thing of beauty, whether due to their place in history, their delicious taste, or their awesomely impressive size. Here’s our road map to adventure on a bun.

Ann’s Snack Bar: Home to “The World Famous Ghetto Burger,” which was named the best burger in America by The Wall Street Journal. Miss Ann has been cook, server and owner for 37 years, though she keeps threatening to retire soon. This place is not for those faint of heart or short on time. You get more than a burger here, you get an experience  -  and perhaps a pretty long one, at that. There are exactly eight seats at the lunch counter (which is held together by duct tape); if you enter the building while those seats are occupied you will be scolded and told to wait outside. Once a spot becomes available and you are seated, plan on waiting for about another hour before you get your food. The entertainment during that hour is watching Miss Ann cook her colossal burgers, smothered with onions, bacon, cheese, chili and all the trimmings. We’ll be really impressed if you finish it all in one sitting. Cash only. 1615 Memorial Dr. SE, Atlanta, GA 30317, 404.687.9207

Flip Burger Boutique: The burger’s gone gourmet here. Sure, you’ll find your standard beef version, but they also offer a cornucopia of other options, featuring patties made out of things like shrimp, mushrooms, venison and chick peas. Whichever creation you choose, compliment it with one of their unique shakes  -  the Krispy Kreme version is popular, but if you’re feeling really adventurous try the foie gras flavor. They don’t accept reservations so be prepared for a potential wait. 1587 Howell Mill Rd., Atlanta, GA 30318, 404.352.3547, www.flipburgerboutique.com

Ted’s Montana Grill: Yes, it’s a multi-state chain, but we’ve got to give it its due because a) we really like their burgers, and b) it has strong local connections, despite the geography in its name that might suggest otherwise. Georgia native and famous entrepreneur Ted Turner is a co-founder, and the corporate headquarters are located in Atlanta  -  not Big Sky Country. Burgers come in your choice of beef or bison; we recommend the buffalo. Several metro area locations. www.tedsmontanagrill.com

The Varsity: Serving the locals since 1928, this community institution is on everyone’s list of places you have to visit when you’re in Atlanta. The original location features the world’s largest drive-in restaurant, though plenty of indoor seating is also available. Car hops and counter people work quickly through the (often long) lines of customers, so you better know what you want when it’s your turn to answer the legendary question: “What’ll ya’ have?” Save room for a yummy frosted orange shake or fried pie. Five metro area locations, but the downtown one by Georgia Tech is the famous original. www.thevarsity.com

The Vortex Bar & Grill: Consider going elsewhere if you’re timid or easily offended, or under 18, for that matter (by state law, because they do allow smoking in designated areas). Quirky furnishings include skulls and portraits of what look like burlesque dancers, though we think they’re actually employees. The management freely admits that they don’t believe in political correctness or the customer always being right, but they do believe in kicking you out if you’re “acting like an idiot.” Keeping your cool is easy, however, when it allows you the opportunity to sample one of more than 20 succulent burger varieties on the menu. Their famous char-grilled sirloin can also be substituted with a grilled chicken breast or veggie, black bean, turkey or bison patty. Plus, they’ve got a HUGE selection of beer and liquor. Two locations: one in Midtown, and one in Little Five Points. www.thevortexbarandgrill.com
