Continua Health Alliance to present at Interoperability Showcase

By Chelsey Ledue, Associate Editor

Continua Health Alliance, a non-profit, open industry coalition of more than 200 healthcare and technology companies collaborating to improve the quality of personal healthcare, will present at the Interoperability Showcase at HIMSS10.

“This show is an effective way to demonstrate the technology,” said Chuck Parker, executive director of Continua Health Alliance.

A second-year presenter for the showcase, Continua will run scenarios to demonstrate the use of devices connected to a physician office, an emergency department and information from a personal health record, at Booth 233 in Hall C.

The live demonstrations will include Continua Certified connected health solutions for assisting in the management of chronic medical conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, congestive heart failure and asthma/chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

“Continua takes chronic care monitoring to the next level,” said Celina Roth, HIMSS’ manager and staff liaison to the Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise. “It can even set up a system to notify emergency contacts when something happens.”

Technology used during the Continua presentation will include a Bluetooth blood pressure cuff and weight scale from A&D Medical, a Bluetooth pulse oximeter from Nonin Medical and a Cypak USB converter cable designed to enable legacy devices to the Continua ecosystem.

These devices will be combined with a HealthLink PC manager from Lamprey Networks, Inc. (LNI) that turns a PC into a home heath gateway, enabling Continua devices to deliver data to personal health records (PHRs). The information then will flow through IBM’s Web services-based Health Records Network interface using IBM’s Connected Home Health through their Healthcare Center of Excellence in La Gaude, France.

Education session 3, “Advancing Information Technology in the Personal Health Solutions Ecosystem,” will also cover Continua material Monday, March 1, at 9:45 AM – 10:45 AM in Room B206.
